Acne and hidradenitis suppurativa

Adult female acne

In the last decade, adult female acne has become a hot topic in acne literature. A lot of questions were asked in the different papers dedicated to the subject:
What is the current definition and categorization?
What about prevalence? Is there a real increase?
What are the actual insights concerning the etiopathogenesis? What role do hormones play? Could it be associated with modern life?
Is there a specific clinical presentation or not? What do we know about the burden of adult female acne?
What are the specific therapeutic challenges of adult female acne?

Answers to all these and more, will be addressed in the EADV Spring Symposium Acne session in Ljubljana.

How to manage comorbidities in hidradenitis suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent skin inflammatory disease associated with a variety of comorbidities, like metabolic syndrome, reduced quality of life, sexual dysfunction, working disability, axial spondyloarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, depression and anxiety. Like psoriasis, HS patients have been found to be at a higher risk of cardiovascular death and suicide risk. Evidence suggests that for such a chronic, multi-comorbid disease, the use of validated outcomes to assess severity and effect of treatment, along with the use of clinically important patient reported outcomes, is essential. Clinicians should be informed about these comorbidities so that appropriate screening is implemented. The potential of available treatments to negatively and positively affect these comorbidities should also be taken into account when designing treatment strategies. A multidisciplinary approach could aid in diagnosing comorbidities and help physicians in choosing the appropriate therapy for each patient.
